Description

The Six Nations of the Grand River Wildlife and Stewardship Office (SNWSO), in partnership with Kayanase, has launched a new Turtle Egg Incubation and Nest Protection Program to help safeguard Ontario’s native turtle populations. This initiative supports the broader conservation goals of both organizations, which include restoring natural habitats, protecting species at risk, and educating the public through culturally grounded stewardship. The program involves staff and volunteers from SNWSO and Kayanase working together to incubate turtle eggs, ensuring hatchlings can be safely released into protected environments. Nests found on the reserve are monitored and shielded from predators and environmental threats, while off-reserve nests are supported through incubation assistance and partnership. Education and protection efforts within the program are guided by Haudenosaunee customs and standards, which emphasize the sacred relationship between people and the natural world. These teachings inform how SNWSO and Kayanase approach conservation, ensuring that their work honors traditional ecological knowledge and respects the cultural significance of turtles in Haudenosaunee worldview. While habitat creation for turtles remains a key objective of both organizations in their ongoing efforts to support biodiversity and ecological health across the territory. Additionally, staff and volunteers contribute to turtle welfare by transporting injured turtles found on the reserve to rehabilitation facilities, helping ensure these animals receive proper care. Through this collaborative and culturally rooted approach, SNWSO and Kayanase are taking meaningful steps to protect vulnerable turtle populations and strengthen the community’s connection to the land.
